Famous Places in Tempe
History of Tempe
Tempe, Arizona, has a unique history that combines Native American heritage, early pioneer settlement, and modern urban development. Located in the Salt River Valley, Tempe was initially part of the homeland of the Hohokam people, who lived in the area from around 300 to 1450 CE. Like other communities in the Phoenix area, the Hohokam in Tempe created an extensive network of irrigation canals that allowed them to farm the desert land. When the Hohokam civilization declined in the 15th century, their canal systems remained and would later be restored by settlers.
The founding of Tempe as a modern settlement began in the late 1860s. Charles Trumbull Hayden, a businessman from the East Coast, traveled to Arizona Territory and saw the potential of the area around the Salt River. In 1871, he established a ferry service to aid transportation across the Salt River and founded a supply station that served travelers, farmers, and military personnel in the region. The community that grew around Hayden’s business became known as Hayden’s Ferry, which was later renamed Tempe.
The name “Tempe” was suggested by Darrell Duppa, an Englishman who saw similarities between the Salt River Valley’s landscape and the Vale of Tempe in Greece. In 1879, “Tempe” became the town’s official name.
The arrival of the railroad in 1887 helped Tempe thrive as an agricultural center, as it connected local farmers to broader markets. Tempe’s economy centered on crops like cotton, citrus, and hay, and the town expanded as more settlers arrived. In 1885, Tempe was selected as the site of the Territorial Normal School, a teacher-training college that would eventually grow into Arizona State University (ASU). ASU would become a defining feature of Tempe, contributing to its growth, culture, and economic development.
Tempe continued to grow in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, when an influx of new residents came to the area due to the warm climate, expanding industries, and nearby military bases. The expansion of ASU and the construction of suburban developments in the postwar era fueled rapid growth, transforming Tempe from a small agricultural community into a bustling suburb of Phoenix.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Tempe’s cityscape changed significantly, with the establishment of the iconic Mill Avenue district, which became a hub for entertainment, shopping, and dining. The construction of Tempe Town Lake in 1999, a reservoir created from the Salt River, revitalized the city’s downtown and attracted new business, tourism, and recreational activities.
Today, Tempe is a vibrant city known for its youthful energy, cultural diversity, and innovation. ASU remains one of the city’s defining institutions, contributing to a high-tech economy and a lively cultural scene. Tempe has evolved into a major part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, blending its historic roots with a modern, urban lifestyle.
